Here’s your cold, hard truth for Saturday: some days, the sportsbook is just faster on the draw. Today was one of them. Our so-called “Smart Picks” limped home at 3-6, and we felt every single scrape on the asphalt. If you’re here for hand-waving excuses, keep walking — we call ‘em like we see ‘em, and today, well, there was a whole lot more “ouch” than “aha!” Still, if pain is the best teacher, then we’re overnighting our tuition check.

The Highlights

Let’s not pretend the glass is half full, but there’s at least enough to swish and savor. First up, the Carolina Hurricanes provided the rare stress-free victory, handling business on the Ottawa ice. No sweat, no drama — just an efficient 4-2 road win from a roster that remembered how to close. Sometimes, betting the favorite is as anxiety-inducing as locking your front door: you trust the process, hope you didn’t miss anything, and tonight, we didn’t.

Switching coasts and sports, the Padres came through — banking a late comeback to edge the Diamondbacks in the desert. That’s a win we’ll gladly collect, even if a good chunk of it came from errors rather than heroics. Baseball is baseball: sometimes you need to let the other team trip over their own shoelaces. (Thank you, Arizona infield.)

Best of all? The Timberwolves, yes the baby-faced Timberwolves, clipped the Nuggets in Minnesota. They’ve quietly become one of our favorite teams to back in nail-biters. D’Angelo Russell was ice cold until he, well, wasn’t—the last-minute surge was just enough to make our +1.5 look sage (if barely so). If only all close calls went this way.

The Misses

Now, where to begin? Let’s start with the Cubs and Dodgers. We counted on the Cubs to keep things closer than LA traffic at rush hour. Instead? Dodgers flash their October form in April, and our +1.5 goes up in… you guessed it, a multi-run cloud of dust.

The Yankees-Astros UNDER looked downright poetic for the first five innings — then both bullpens remembered their April ERAs and transformed a pitcher’s duel into a street festival. Nine runs by the seventh. We could only look on with the same horror as a manager watching his reliever walk the bases loaded.

Boston and Baltimore was another clown car. Orioles moneyline was the pick, but they got stymied by Red Sox pitching and timely bats. Turns out you can’t always count on Camden Yards to turn into a bandbox, no matter what the forecast says.

We also put our faith in the Brewers, thinking a home date with the Pirates was all but a gimme. Spoiler: it wasn’t. Milwaukee’s bats evaporated, Pittsburgh’s pitching shined, and our “safe” call went the way of most “safe” calls in April — straight into the loss column, forever lost in the fog on Lake Michigan.

Around the Sports World

Outside the picks, the league storylines were almost as wild as our ticket. Did you catch the extra-inning magic in that Rays-Blue Jays game? Or the total collapse by the Warriors losing a 17-point lead to the Kings? There’s something weird brewing in both the AL East and the NBA’s lower seeds.

Minnesota fans (no, not a typo, they do exist) flooded Target Center after toppling Denver. This is a young team with teeth. Meanwhile, Astros-Yankees never fails to bring chaos. If you faded the totals, you got paid; if you followed us, you’re nursing a headache.

And hey, our recent five-day trend still floats above water at 29-21 (58%). Not victory-parade material, but you won’t catch us complaining.
